You are watching: Who sings tequilla makes her clothes fall off
There"s a fine line on that song between being risque and humorous — and I"ve got to tell you, as a fan of great songwriting, you walk that perfectly. Did you think about that when you and Gary Hannan wrote that song?
Yeah, absolutely. We wrote that in 2004, so it was a lot more reserved back then. Toby Keith was kind of the only one that was doing stuff like that. Gary and I had been working on a song, and you know how Nashville is. It basically shuts down between Thanksgiving and New Year"s. We had been writing all day, and I finally said at about 2 o"clock, "Gary, I"m gonna go get a beer. Do you want to come with me?" So we go to the brewhouse down here, and I had a beer and said, "Man this ain"t doing it for me. I want something a little stronger. I go up to the bar, and I turn around (to Gary) and say, "Can I get you a shot?" And he said, "Yeah, anything but tequila. Tequila makes my pants fall off." I said, "That"s what should have been working on today!" He said in his South African accent, "You can"t write a song about pants falling off!" I said, "Yeah, you can, man." That"s how it all started. I"ve still got the Budweiser coaster I wrote it down on.
Did (the song) come quickly? Because, again, you take it right up to the edge, but you don"t jump over the cliff in that song. And I think the humor made that acceptable for radio.
I"ve got three sisters and a mother, and I had plenty to draw from back in the day. They"d all get wild and they"d lose stuff, and the more they drank, the more they would lose. My mama would (say), "Now, where did I put my pocketbook?" That"s what I was drawing from that whole time.
Did you and Gary have to finesse that over time?
Well, it came pretty quick, but there were some places, like at the end, (where we said) "How are we gonna wrap this up?" We wrapped it up with the obvious thing, that the next day, after a big party, they"re like, "Oh God, what happened?" And just throwing in the disclaimer that "She don"t mean nothing, she"s just having fun" kind of lets him off the hook.
